Abstract

For my capstone I partook in a 12-week internship at Amazon as a software development engineer intern. I was working individually on a project titled "Seller Central Pricing Validation System". My team is located in Austin, Texas and are responsible for configuring Seller Central, Amazon's seller listing portal, for new regional marketplaces, an example being Sweden, which we launched this summer. The system my project validated is used to ensure competitive pricing from 3rd party listings on Amazon by featuring competitive offers and hiding non-competitive ones. This action is determined by comparing the listing price to similar items sold by competitors in the given marketplace. If the new listing is overpriced, compared to our competitors, then it will be placed into the "see all buying options" category on Amazon's marketplace. This system requires marketplace specific competitors, so there is a database configured for each marketplace consisting of all the major competitors for that region. My project was responsible for automatically validating this system for new marketplaces, which was previously done over two weeks of manually querying databases. Automation was accomplished by feeding new listings into the upstream, marketplace specific, databases and then querying the downstream database to ensure that the system was properly recognizing and comparing the listings. I was responsible for drafting the design document, presenting to our organization, writing documentation, answering any questions, and creating the finished product. This was done with the help of my mentor, a software development engineer 1, from my team who volunteered to help with my transition into Amazon and answer any questions I had about the project.
