Tomomi Nakamura "Web
Development Internship at Diamond Head, Co., Ltd" (Diamond Head Co., Ltd) Faculty Advisor: Dr. Nancy Kool |
Abstract For my Summer 2020 capstone internship I worked at Diamond
Head Co., Ltd., an e-commerce company based in Japan. Specifically, I worked
with two different teams. During the first four weeks, with the first team, I
worked on 8 of the company's 70 leading fashion-brand websites, focusing on
frontend web design. I made modifications of the websites, which were built
using the Laravel framework. Modifications included rearranging web design,
such as color and text, using PHP, SaaS, and Bootstrap; creating a dynamic
feature to observe real-time user input errors using JavaScript; and setting
up new categories using WordPress and API. Through this experience, I learned
more about frontend side of website architecture. During the last 8 weeks, I
worked with another team to implement a sorting database system for clothing
items in terms of size and price, using the company's algorithm. Diamond Head
shoots products in 11 studios and performs everything from photography to
measurement, using their own system to manage products. The goal of this
project was to design and implement a customized widget capable of
automatically sorting data by using a related entity and display in JSON data
format. Through working on multiple aspects of websites
(e.g., user interface, scripting, API, database, server, and implementation
using the AWS and Azure cloud services) these internship projects helped me
gain knowledge of how a website is structured and operated. Besides
technological takeaways, I have developed the communication and management
skills from this remote internship, which featured an 8-hour time difference.
The frequent meetings with team and my internship advisor helped me to
clarify goals and build built a deeper relationship with other employees and
avoid misconception. Overall, this internship experience has given me a
confidence to move to my next path, and I am looking forward to challenging a
new project using skills I have learned. |
