John Neigel "InHome:
An Application to Assist with Memory Care" (Individual Project - Student Defined) Faculty Advisor: Arkady Retik |
Abstract Alzheimer's disease, Dementia, and
other conditions which affect the functionality of memory can be debilitating
and sometimes require constant supervision of the afflicted. There are,
however, many people who can live independently with help from reminders.
Reminders to change clothes, drink fluids, take medication, get exercise, and
go to appointments, among other things. This is where InHome, a mobile
application for devices powered by the Android OS fills a unique need. InHome
is a reminder application which allows the user to record personal messages
to be played when the reminder activates and to schedule those reminders by
date as well as day of the week. It was designed with input from family
members of persons with memory care needs, medical professionals, and a Human
Factors / UX researcher. InHome features a size and orientation flexible GUI,
capable of being run on an Android device operating on API level 29 and
above. To respect user's privacy, user inputted data and alarm information
are saved in an SQLite database on the device itself. The result was a simple
but effective application for supporting those with memory care needs. |
